The Session: In this performance challenge program, the participants will experiment with and perform a piece of Samba de Malandro choreography! Learn the Brazilian history and culture that influences the dance movements, and really immerse yourself in the Malandro character, movements, and musicality. This dance style is open to all gender identities, and at an open-level, you can participate whether you are brand new to samba, or an experienced Brazilian dancer.

Your costume to keep will be influenced by the red + white suit with brimmed hat. Your class package includes 4 hours of technique and in-class instruction, and an additional 4 hours of choreography and practice. At the end of the session, we will schedule an additional hour or rehearsal right before your first stage performance to make sure you’re feeling your best in your costume and in your movements.

Participants’ main performance opportunity will be on the main stage of African Descent Festival on August 10 + 11. Through July and August, students may also get other opportunities to perform at various Vancouver festivals and Latin cultural events. While participation at all performances is not required, it is highly encouraged!

Performance participants have the option to RENT or BUY their performance costume. Performance costume fees go towards coordinating your performance, ordering and shipping your costume, and hiring a professional photographer for the performance.
